The LED notifications feature uses the iPhone 5, 4s or 4s camera flash as a notification light. This works for pretty much anything that you have set up with notifications like text messages, emails or Tweets. Below is the video tutorial and instruction on how to get LED notifications on the iPhone 5, iPhone 4s and iPhone 4. Keep in mind this should work in theory with any iPhone that has a flash.

Can’t it be continuing flashing until I open the email/text?

The flash on the iPhone is pretty strong. If it continued to flash and you didn’t notice for say 30 minutes it would easily burn out your battery.
